The Knuckleheads of the Day award

Today's winners are Brenda Batisse and Sudbury Regional Hospital. They get the award for the following.

A newborn girl who was snatched from a Sudbury hospital by a stranger was found alive last night more than 300 kilometres from where she was last seen in the arms of a woman dressed as a nurse.

The day-old baby was taken from her mother's room on the third floor of the Sudbury Regional Hospital. She was reported missing at about 1:15 p.m. Police issued an Amber Alert, signalling the child was believed to have been abducted and was in danger.

The alert was lifted around 9 p.m. when the infant was found safe in Kirkland Lake, about a four-hour drive northeast of Sudbury.

Brenda Batisse, 19, of Kirkland Lake, was arrested after police traced a licence plate to the area. She is to be charged in connection with the abduction, police said.

After the baby was located around 8:30 p.m., the infant girl was rushed to Kirkland Lake Hospital for medical assessment and was deemed to be "in good health."

"The fact the baby was only hours old, there would be need for medical attention," said Sudbury Constable Albert Lapalme.

The baby was being reunited with her family last night. "I can only imagine they're elated," he said of the family, whose names were not released.

Earlier in the day, police released security camera images of a young woman wearing a white top and pants and a black sweater - apparel similar to that of hospital staff.

Security footage showed the woman alone in the hospital at 12:33 p.m. She cradled the baby at 12:46 p.m., he said.

"She was in the hospital for a period of time. There is no urgency in her appearance or manoeuvres."
Ms. Batisse either is disturbed or seeking attention, neither of which lets her off from her actions in my book. Sudbury hospital grossly failed to protect one of its patients. Read the rest of the article at the link. They pretty much admit there are ways to get around security. For this blundering a family was put through hell until the child was found.

Brenda Batisse and Sudbury Regional Hospital are today's Knuckleheads of the Day.
