Where does President Bush stand on the Akaka bill?
I've blogged before about this unnecessary and probably unconstitutional legislation. The question that still remained to be answered from my previous posts was where President Bush stood in regards to this legislation.
Now it appears we have the answer. Malia Zimmerman writes in yesterday's Hawaii Reporter-
Sen. Akaka has filed a petition for a cloture, which could force debate and a vote on the bill if 60 senators support his petition.
That may happen because Hawaii's Republican Governor Linda Lingle is fighting for the passage of the bill along with Hawaii's Democrat Congressional delegation. Lingle has rallied the support of the president behind the bill, and behind the scenes President Bush is said to be lobbying Republican Senators to pass the measure. In addition, the president's administration reportedly has asked the U.S. Justice Department to downplay its concerns over the constitutionality of the bill.
Why does President Bush support this legislation? To support two democratic Senators who whine at his policies? For the majority of Hawaiians who oppose it? Because the law makes any kind of sense?
It is unfathomable to me why President Bush supports this. Combine this with the recent recess appointment of John Bolton and I have to wonder where common sense has gone in the White House.
