Corazon Aquino calls for Gloria Arroyo to resign
Philippine President Gloria Arroyo's troubles continue to worsen. Ten members of her cabinet have resigned and now former President Corazon Aquino is calling for Arroyo's resignation according to Bloomberg online.
``I am asking the president to spare our country and herself.'' said Aquino, who played a key role in ousting dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986 and President Joseph Estrada in 2001. Arroyo should ``make the supreme sacrifice of resigning,'' Aquino said in a televised briefing.
Earlier today, most of Arroyo's economic team, including Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, Budget Secretary Emilia Boncodin and Tax Commissioner Guillermo Parayno, abandoned the government along with eight other officials as Arroyo, 58, battles accusations she cheated in 2004 polls. For five weeks, there have been calls for her ouster, dragging financial markets.
If Arroyo did leave office, Vice President Noli de Castro would suceed. I doubt little would change in Philippine politics, corruption is so pervasive at every level. It would just another case of Same Dog, Different collar.
