What's next, Darfur?
Farris Hassan is back in the news.
(CBS4) FT. LAUDERDALE In 2005, 15-year old Farris Hassan made headlines when he made a secret trip to Iraq without telling his parents. This isn't quite the same as Farris' previous escapade, he traveled as part of a group this time. What ever the definition of group is in this particular case.
Now, the Ft. Lauderdale teen has done it again - this time he's in Afghanistan.
Hassan's mother said she didn't know her 17-year-old son was going anywhere until he called from the plane just before it left Miami International Airport three weeks ago.
"The purpose was to investigate women's rights in Afghanistan," said Hassan's mother Shatha Atiya, "and also to see how effective is the new government and what has changed and not."
Hassan, who is traveling with a group, told his parents he decided to fly to Afghanistan to study the progress of women's rights and the plight of impoverished street children.
"He stayed in touch through email, letting me know about his daily activities calling me from there," said Atiya.
The teen is expected home Tuesday or Wednesday.
Maybe Farris Hassan's parents should put an ankle monitor on their son. Otherwise, who knows where he'll end up next.
