Seminole County -- An 11-year-old girl drowned Sunday afternoon in the family's bathtub after she was momentarily left unattended, Seminole County authorities said.

Shanika Polite was briefly left alone in the bathtub at the family's home in the unincorporated Midway area. When the girl's mother found the child unconscious, she called 911 and tried to revive the girl, who was rushed to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford, where she was pronounced dead, Seminole County sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Hoeppner said.

Sheriff's officials are investigating whether Shanika had special needs or a medical condition. She lived with her mother, Colleen D. Bradley, 37, and Tyrone Burley, 28.

This story reminds me of an old Dragnet episode.

I was always taught you never leave unattended in the bath tub under any circumstances. Unless foul play was involved, the 11-year-old had to have some condition that kept them from caring for themselves. RIP Shanika Polite.
