The Knucklehead of the Day award
Today's winner is Alexander Barro. He gets the award for the following.
For the second time, police say, Alexander Barro got caught cybertrolling for boys -- and both times, his captor was Miami Detective Kathy Baker. Not new problems, just the old one. For being a repeat pervert, Alexander Barro is today's Knucklehead of the Day.
Their quasi-reunion wasn't planned.
Baker first arrested Barro in January 2005 after police say he arranged through the Internet a meeting for sex at a Miami Walgreens with someone he believed was a teenage boy.
Last July, Baker logged into an America Online chat room again, this time posing as a 14-year-old named Stevie. A man under a different screen name -- but with familiar overtures -- began messaging.
The alleged predator, they later learned, was Barro. He was arrested Tuesday after he had arranged another meeting with Baker.
''I was shocked -- but not totally surprised. A lot of times these guys go back to the Internet and think this time they're not going to get caught,'' Baker said.
Barro was arrested at his Miami home, the home he shares with his parents. Baker, along with Secret Service agents, also seized his computer.
'As soon as he saw me, he said, `Hey, I know you,' '' Baker said.
Barro, 36, a beefy former U.S. immigration adjudication officer, is charged with using the Internet to solicit a minor for sex.
He's still facing trial for the 2005 charges of attempted lewd and lascivious battery on a child and prohibited use of a computer.
Barro's attorney, Larry Rogers, had been working on a plea deal.
''Obviously, there are new problems,'' Rogers said.
