To the sandlox all of you

That's where we need to send our Palm Beach County Commissioners who seem more intent on squabbling with one another than doing County business. I've blogged on this before.

One thing I love in this article, is the quote from Adele Greene. She is no angel herself, read this. Just like yesterday, the news is full of knuckleheads and the immature. These kind of days make it tougher not easier to pick a Knucklehead winner, there is so many to choose from. Trust me I'll get to today's award.

Legal fights turned into political bickering Thursday among Palm Beach County commissioners trying to decide where to build a home for Scripps Florida.

Tempers flared when commissioners learned it would cost more and take longer than anticipated to build a Scripps' headquarters at Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter -- the company's preferred alternative to the county's rural Mecca Farms property.

"I am very, very frustrated with the credibility of this board really going down the toilet," Commissioner Mary McCarty said.

An agreement Commission Chairman Tony Masilotti helped broker last week was supposed to limit the cost increase of building Scripps at FAU to about $7 million, but it could cost as much as $9 million, county Scripps manager Shannon LaRocque said. The deal also did not include the $8 million Florida Power and Light Co. said it would cost to bury power lines as proposed.

And while Masilotti continued to say Thursday that the FAU deal would allow Scripps to start construction "tomorrow," County Administrator Robert Weisman said changing construction would require as much as a 10-month delay.

McCarty, who prefers Mecca -- where the county has invested more than $100 million -- said commissioners never authorized Masilotti to negotiate a deal and told him to "stop this foolishness."

"For you to do that," McCarty said, "was either to try to box this board in or it was to try to confuse the public."

Masilotti shot back that the commission designated him point-person on Scripps.

He said he met with Scripps and FAU officials last week to try to cut costs for building on university land as an alternative to Mecca, where construction was stopped by a judge's ruling in November after environmentalists' opposition to its location.

"I am not going to take it," Masilotti said to McCarty. "Your intimidation doesn't work with me."

In response to McCarty's criticism that Masilotti did not involve more county officials in negotiations last week, Masilotti said he tried to call LaRocque as many as six times but couldn't reach her the day of the talks.

McCarty asked Masilotti to provide his cell phone records to show proof of the calls.

"We are still spinning our wheels," Commissioner Addie Greene said. "All we are doing is fighting one another."
