Philippine President Arroyo ducks impeachment?
It appears so.
MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- With the opposition boycotting, a Philippine congressional committee voted Wednesday to quash all impeachment complaints against President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
The move by the House justice committee appeared to be a death blow to the opposition's legal effort to oust Arroyo over allegations that she rigged last year's election.
But her critics had threatened to launch the country's third "people power" revolt if the case against the U.S.-trained economist was halted without being heard.
The vote culminated two rancorous days, starting with a walkout Tuesday by opposition members of the justice committee, who claimed the case was being killed unfairly on the strength of the Arroyo administration's dominance in the House.
People are still clamoring for Arroyo's impeachment. Politics in the Philippines remains in a sorry state. I've blogged about it before, here and here are two examples. Crooked, greedy politicans robbing the treasaury when much of the country lives in poverty. The Philippine people deserve better.
