Do they know the difference between their left and their right?

Here is some news from West Virginia.

Kanawha County taxpayers might have noticed a few things wrong with their tax tickets that were sent out last week.

For one, the return address on the tickets does not show through the enclosed return envelope.

“The address went to the right and window went to the left,” said Chief Tax Deputy Allen Bleigh.

Also, some people got real estate tax tickets that normally are sent to their banks.

The county changed mailing vendors midstream and did not notice the return address error until about half of the 181,820 tickets to be mailed had been sealed in their envelopes, Bleigh said.

The county paid $2,000 to $3,000 to include the return envelopes as a courtesy, not a requirement, he said.

Bleigh advised taxpayers to simply fold the statement so that the address shows through the window. Taxpayers can also address and use one of their own envelopes.

“In years past, people used to fold up their statement, tape it and use it as a makeshift envelope,” he said. “I’ve seen some inventive things.”

Some taxpayers were confused when their real estate tax tickets arrived at their homes, when banks normally handle those payments to the county as part of a mortgage service. The county sent out 130,871 real estate tickets this year, Bleigh said.

In May, the county sent letters to all the banks that pay real estate taxes in the county to see what taxpayer accounts the banks had on file in Kanawha County, Bleigh said. Many banks did not reply and the county was forced to send tax slips to some homeowners instead, he said.

When government can't even get a simple matter of mailing envelopes correct, how are we supposed to trust them to screw up bigger or life and death issues? Like if we had national health care.
