Two boys burned down their grandparents' home in Pompano Beach and displaced the family while setting fire to cockroaches, a city spokeswoman said Sunday.

The boys, ages 8 and 10, were sleeping over at the house in the 800 block of Northwest 17th Terrace on Saturday when they began burning the cockroaches, using rubbing alcohol and a lighter, city spokeswoman Sandra King said.

The extermination experiment went awry when the boys' bed caught on fire. Flames engulfed the bedroom and spread throughout the house, which did not have a smoke detector, King said.

The family was unhurt, she said. The Red Cross is providing shelter for them and the boys will most likely attend a youth fire prevention and education program.

Grandparents are notorious for spoiling their grandchildren. Somehow I think these youths will be in for punishment instead. You burned down our house, no ice cream for a year is going!
