Weekends Only
Some news from Poland-
WARSAW, Poland, July 25: Poles sentenced to prison terms of up to 12 months for minor offenses could serve their time during weekends only, a Polish Cabinet minister said Wednesday. If a person is sentenced to a year in jail, to complete his or her sentence on weekends only, will take over three years.
Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro said new regulations should allow minor offenders jailed up to 12 months and convicts imprisoned not longer than six months to serve their terms in periods of two days a week, preferably during weekends, Polish Radio said.
Ziobro said with this system of serving jail terms, convicts could take care of their children, keep on with their jobs or study during the week.
And not the least important, the Polish government would also benefit from savings in the state budget, Ziobro said.
He didn't say when the new regulations would be introduced.
Combine that with the processing that a person being jailed must undergo both on his way in and when released, makes me question if any real savings will take place. Otherwise this method for a minor criminal to serve his sentence would seem a solid alternative to straight line incarceration.
