The Knucklehead of the Day award

Today's winner is Franca Gasperetti. She gets the award for the following.

Franca Gasperetti stabbed herself and her 3-year-old son in Boynton Beach last week after she "snapped" in a fit over the exposure of her affair with a friend of her husband, police said.

Gasperetti, 43, initially told police that she and Anthony were attacked and robbed last Friday in the gated Nautica Sound development during a walk in a wooded area. Both were taken to Delray Medical Center, with the child suffering more serious cuts to his chest and arms.

But once Anthony told a nurse and a detective his mother slashed him, police said she admitted her story was false.

Police arrested Gasperetti on Thursday and charged her with attempted felony murder and aggravated child abuse. Officers picked her up at Columbia Hospital in West Palm Beach, where she was getting treated for an unrelated condition.

Anthony remains in the hospital. His injuries are not life threatening, police said.
