Just before a judge ruled in the Anna Nicole Smith case, a powerful Senate money manager warned Thursday that legislators were getting tired of the nationally televised spectacle of lawyers fighting over her.

During a meeting of the Senate Justice Appropriations Committee, chairman Victor Crist said the Broward County judicial circuit's funding in the 2007 legislative session could suffer if Circuit Judge Larry Seidlin doesn't wrap up the case quickly. Seidlin later in the day gave Richard Milstein, a court-appointed guardian for the woman's infant daughter, permission to make the decision.

"The bottom line is, we've got a lot of circuit judges here in the audience," Crist said at a budget hearing on several matters. "If you've got any pull with that circuit judge down there, tell him that Broward's money is drying up quickly and he needs to move this thing through and stop having Florida look foolish in our judicial system."

The discussion started with a bill requiring judges to hold hearings before releasing offenders who violate probation. Sen. Mandy Dawson, D-Fort Lauderdale, questioned whether the bill should give judges unfettered discretion to decide which probation violators to lock up and which to release, and she cited the televised Smith hearings as an example of what can happen in court.

Crist, R-Temple Terrace, concurred.

"Every day, Florida gets more attention for how comic our judicial system is in Broward County," he said.
