While I slept
This news surfaced out of Cuba.
HAVANA Jul 31, 2006 (AP)— Fidel Castro announced Monday night in a letter read by his secretary live on state television that due to illness he was temporarily relinquishing the presidency to his brother and successor Raul, the defense minister. So Castro is dying? Aren't we all then? The reports of his demise have been exaggerated in the past. However he is 80, and any human at that age has their body breaking down.
In the letter read by his secretary Carlos Valenciaga, Castro said he had suffered gastrointestinal bleeding, apparently due to stress from recent public appearances in Argentina and Cuba, and had to undergo an operation.
Even if Fidel dies, freedom won't be coming immediately to the Cuban people. Raul Castro will take over. Little will change for at least a few more years. Lets pray for the future freedom of Cuba.
We'll have to await further developments. TFM will be following the news out of Cuba, but I suggest you go visit Val at Babalu Blog for much more regular updates.
