The Knucklehead of the Day award

Today's winner is Randy Schultz, the Editor of the Editorial Page for the Palm Beach Post. He gets today's award for his column in yesterday's newspaper. Actually it comes down to one insulting sentence.

If you want an augury (n., meaning “omen” or “warning”) that things are nuts, consider that you could bet on last week’s National Spelling Bee.

Reading that, I was flummoxed (adj., meaning “confused” or “bewildered”). Back in the day when gambling meant just Las Vegas, the horse track or the neighborhood bingo parlor, old guys with names like Moe and Vinny hung out at Off Track Betting parlors in New York City and argued over the “C” horse at Belmont. Would such plaguy (adj., meaning “disagreeable”) characters today put down $100 on which kid would be stumped by diaconate (n., meaning “board of deacons”)? Would there be an over-and-under for how many letters the climactic word would be?

Just about. From the online betting company that gave American Idol viewers a chance to wager on the outcome came this Bee tip sheet:

“With three more male contestants entered in this year’s contest, the odds favor a male winner, listed at 5/7 odds (i.e., win $5 for every $7 bet), over a female spelling champ, listed at 5/4. PinnacleSports.com believes that the odds are also against the winner being listed as 'homeschooled’ (5/2) and wearing glasses when they correctly spell the championship word (3/2). The odds also favor the champion originating east of the Mississippi River at 2/3, versus living on the west of the river at 4/3.”

America, you now can bet on nerds..

The definition of nerd.

an insignificant student who is ridiculed as being affected or studying excessively:
So if one studies hard and does well in academic competitions, one is a insignifigant. American culture too often belittles those who are very smart. You know something- it's wrong. People envy or hate those who are smarter than them. In Mr. Schultz's case, he probably fears them. These young people will grow up and possibly one day read the Post's editorial page. They may see it for the flimsy far left rag it is. How can you bemoan how poor our schools are and then insult the ones who suceed Randy? Tell me. What I smell is just another case of liberal elitism here. If it isn't, Randy you should pick your words more carefully.

For picking on smart children like a schoolyard bully, Randy Schultz is today's knucklehead of the day.
