Right around the corner

This bit of news happened not more than 100 yards from my home. It happened just before 5 p.m. here. I heard the sound of police sirens and a friend said there was a shooting next door. Out of curiosity I walked over to check. The police already had the crime scene tape up and no one was talking.

A man was shot in the chest and his neighbor arrested for the crime at an apartment building near Lantana today, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

The shooting happened about 4 p.m. at the building, which sits at the intersection of Donnely Drive and Lear Drive. The shooter and victim had been in an ongoing dispute, said sheriff's office spokeswoman Teri Barbera. It escalated this afternoon and ended with the accused shooter, who is about 60, using a handgun to fire one shot into the victim, who is in his early 40s.

The victim was airlifted to Delray Medical Center. His wound is not life threatening, Barbera said.
