A pet duck was shot in the head with a BB gun and beheaded by a 37-year-old neighbor, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Richard Chillingworth, a carpenter from suburban West Palm Beach, was arrested Tuesday and charged with cruelty to animals.

His neighbor had raised the duck in a lake for the past three years. But at about 5 p.m. Tuesday, Chillingworth shot the duck with the BB gun, fished it out of the lake, cut off its head and told his landlord he planned to eat it.

When deputies arrived, they said, they found Chillingworth passed out drunk and the duck hanging upside down from his home's awning.

Chillingworth acknowledged shooting the duck, the sheriff's office said.
