Parents like this just leave me exasperated. How dumb can some mothers and fathers be with their children's lives? Very dumb, or even deadly like here.

A 25-year-old suburban woman has been sentenced to 30 days in jail and has lost custody of her three children after she admitted leaving them home alone so she could go to a taping of "The Jerry Springer Show" in downtown Chicago.

Shannon Cook, of Westmont, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of endangering the life of a child, authorities said. All three of her offspring were under the age of 3 at the time of the Oct. 19 incident.

A neighbor of Cook's called police that day after one of the children came knocking on her apartment door.

Authorities said Cook and her boyfriend left their apartment about 3 p.m. and did not return until nearly 1 a.m. the following day.

The woman told investigators she thought she would return earlier, according to police reports.

The children ranged in age from 9 months to 3 years, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services reported.
