The Knucklehead of the Day award

Today's winner is Plantation Florida resident Kathryn Stough. The mother of a 7-year-old-boy left her child in a parked SUV Monday night while she went inside a bar to have some drinks. Fortunately a door man saw what was going on and called the police.

Will people ever learn this is endangering their children? You'd think over 40 children dying in locked cars in one year would teach them.

Below is part of the Sun-Sentinel article.

Davie -- A mother left her 7-year-old son sleeping in a sports utility vehicle late Monday night while she ducked into a bar for an hour and ran up a $14 tab, police said.

The Plantation woman cracked a window three inches and left the boy, who was not harmed, sleeping on the back seat on an 85-degree and humid night. A doorman at the Ye Olde Falcon Pub on University Drive noticed the boy sweating in the SUV and called police.

Officers arrested Kathryn Stough, 33, on child neglect charges. The child has been placed in the custody of other family members.Davie police said it was around midnight when Stough arrived at the pub. The bar's doorman told officers he saw Stough run out to her car three or four times in between drinks, said police spokesman Lt. Bill Bamford.

The doorman approached the SUV, saw the child and called police about 1:10 a.m., Bamford said.Stough was being held Tuesday on $1,000 bond.

In January 2004, Plantation police arrested Stough for driving under the influence and cruelty toward a child without great harm. The cruelty charges were dropped and she pleaded guilty to misdemeanor drunk driving charges, lost her license for five years and was sentenced to nine years probation.

In 2003, 42 children died nationwide from heat exposure after being left in vehicles, according to Kids and Cars, a Kansas-based group that advocates improved child safety.
