The July 4th Knucklehead Marathon Part Twenty-Five
Today's twenty-fifth winner is Victor Orena. He gets the award for the following.
A father slit his 10-year-old son's throat Tuesday in a Golden Gate home before stabbing himself in the stomach, investigators said. The father probably did the attack to get back in some warped way at his wife. How can a parent do this to their own child. Victor Orena is today's twenty-fifth Knucklehead of the Day.
Father and son remained in critical condition Tuesday night, according to officials at Lee Memorial Hospital.
Adrian Orena, the boy, was expected to survive, according to the Collier County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies waited at the hospital Tuesday evening for 36-year-old Victor Orena to come out of surgery, so that they could question him.
If he survives, he could face applicable charges, according to sheriff's spokeswoman Kristin Adams.
Unless Victor Orena talks, Adams said investigators can only speculate why Victor Orena would break into the home where his estranged wife was staying and attack his own child.
Authorities said the attack happened before 11 a.m. at 2594 Santa Barbara Blvd. Victor Orena, traveling with another son, came there from Fort Myers and was looking for his wife. The name of the other son was not released.
Witnesses said the man knocked on the door, but when nobody answered, he smashed a window to get inside.
Once inside, Adams said, Orena asked for his wife. Adrian and others living in the home were there, but his wife was nowhere to be found.
He then grabbed the boy and threatened to cut him, Adams said. Soon, he did just that, slicing the boy's throat, then plunging the knife into his own stomach.
