POMPANO BEACH -- Authorities Monday afternoon released the name of the 18-year-old Iowa woman who threw her newborn baby girl down a Pompano Beach hotel trash chute early Saturday morning. Ashley R. Truitt was charged with premeditated murder and is being held in jail without bond, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.



Investigators from BSO said they followed a trail of blood in the hallway from the chute to the woman's room at the Wyndham resort at 2601 Palm Aire Drive North, where she was staying with her family and boyfriend.

Truitt, of Solon, Iowa, began feeling labor pains at midnight and gave birth at 4:30 a.m. in her bathroom, according to BSO. She cut the umbilical cord with a kitchen knife and put the crying baby in a clear plastic garbage bag with bath towels.

A medical examiner said the baby died from a blunt trauma wound after the infant landed in a Dumpster seven stories below.

The woman's family and boyfriend told authorities that she had denied being pregnant despite gaining weight and wearing looser clothing recently.

Florida has a safe haven policy and all this mother had to do was turn the baby over to the fire department. My wife and I are parents to two angels in heaven, we'd do anything to have our children alive and well. Stories like this make me sometimes hate blogging, because in search for something to write about, you come across stupidity like this.
