A man and his 10-year-old daughter were on an evening bike ride when he suggested that they jump off the Lantana Bridge into the Intracoastal Waterway, police said.
The frightened little girl agreed, and at 7:45 p.m. Monday, Troy Stewart, 31, held his daughter's hand and they dropped about 25 feet into the water.
Meagan Stewart was not hurt, but her father broke his leg when he hit the bottom.
"He thought he could break her fear of heights by doing that. Instead he broke his leg," said Lantana Police Capt. Andy Rundle.
"I wouldn't consider this an appropriate method of trying to break your kid of a phobia. Considering he got hurt, she could've just as easily got hurt," Rundle said.
It's unclear whether Meagan overcame her fear of heights, but she did learn about the dangers of jumping off a bridge.
Meagan had to swim about 50 feet to shore and seek help for her father.
A rescue ambulance arrived to take Stewart to JFK Medical Center.
Meagan told police she was not afraid of her father and was not forced to jump.
Police did not file charges against Stewart but are still investigating whether Meagan is endangered.
