Go Peanut and other golfing notes
*- This weekend's LPGA event in Mexico City is shaping up as Peanut and The Pink Panther vs The Evil One.
So who are Peanut, The Pink Panther and The Evil One?
Peanut- Mi Hyun Kim(pictured at the left). Her nickname is based on her size. She bearly measures five feet tall.
The Pink Panther- Paula Creamer. She likes to wear pink on the golf course. Therefore the nickname.
The Evil One- Annika Sorrenstam. She isn't really evil, its just a nickname given to her by a PakPicker because Annika often wears black while playing.
I'm rooting for Peanut. She hasn't won since 2002 but has five lifetime wins. Go Peanut!
*- If a South Korean golfer, Mi Hyun Kim for one, or Seon Wha Lee who is one shot back, wins this weekend, it will mark the third consecutive win for players from this small nation.
South Korea keeps cranking out top lady golfers. Which is amazing for a nation of 40-50 million people which doesn't have either a youth or college golf programs. The country is very proud of its golfers, rightly so. They keep coming too, a 16-year-old amateur won a major event in Australia last month. This is not a short-term trend.
The Palm Beach Post at the beginning of this LPGA season predicted SK golfers will win as many events as Annika Sorrenstam in 2006. Right now it stands South Korea 2, Annika 0. Sorrenstam is playing in her first event of the year but she may have a tough time keeping up.
*- Luke Donald and Billy Mayfair lead the PGA Tour's Honda Classic going into today's final round. This is men's annual stop in Palm Beach County where I live.
I won't be attending. Mirasol is not a walking friendly golf course, and when I go to a tournament I like to walk. So I'll be watching it at home this afternoon. The LPGA is on at the same time, I'll tape one and watch the other.
*- Greg Stoda wrote a column yesterday pondering if drugs(steroids) could have made its way onto the PGA tour. I am certain a few players do try to take this shortcut to improve their play however I feel its a handful of players. PGA tour pro Dave Hill said thirty years ago some players did just that. Why should it be different today?
I do note two things about Stoda's column. First he talks to a pro who is known for his on course cheating. Second, Stoda may be talking about the wrong tour. Anyone seen Annika Sorrenstam in a dress lately? I remember a picture of her accepting some award last year. You have to wonder.
