Two US Opens- Yesterday and next weekend
First I want to congratulate Michael Campbell on his win. He played a very steady and impressive round of golf to win his first major. Way to go Michael.
Retief Goosen's collapse yesterday was unexpected but not unprecedented. If you recall I brought up the fact that Retief was trying to join Hale Irwin as the only three time open winner.
Now these two golfers also share something, blown chances to win win a third Open title. Goosen's collapse is being compared to Greg Norman at the 96 Masters. The better comparison is Hale Irwin at the 84 US Open at Winged Foot. On the same course he won the 74 open, Hale entered the final round tied with Fuzzy Zoeller for the lead. Hale shot 79 on Sunday to finish far behind.
Maybe Retief will have better luck at a future Open. I wouldn't bet against him.
The US Women's Golf Open starts this Thursday at Cherry Hills CC in the suburbs of Denver Colorado. Meg Mallon is the defending champ but Annika Sorrenstam is getting the attention as she continues her run at a Grand Slam. I'll comment more on this later this week.
