Commentary, sarcasm and snide remarks from a Florida resident of over thirty years. Being a glutton for punishment is a requirement for residency here. Who am I? I've been called a moonbat by Michelle Malkin, a Right Wing Nut by Daily Kos, and middle of the road by Florida blog State of Sunshine. Tell me what you think.

Makes me wonder......

It was reported in today's Sports news that Florida State University and the Seminole Indian tribe have come to an agreement allowing the school to continue using Seminole as the name for the university's sports teams.

Two observations

1- Maybe I am cynical but I wouldn't be surprised if some kind of money was passed to get this approval.

2- I don't understand the people who take umbarge at Schools who take Indian names. After all in a way its a way of remembering native Americans. How many people outside of Florida would even have heard of the Seminooles. In my opinion its just political correctness run amok.

Hollywood ยท Long known for wrestling gators, the Seminole Tribe is officially aligning with a state university that does the same thing.

The Tribal Council approved a resolution on Friday supporting Florida State University's use of the Seminole mascot and other Indian-based showcases. It's the first time the tribe has passed such a resolution, although it has long been proud of the relationship, even suggesting how FSU's Chief Osceola mascot should look.

When Indian tribes around the country tried blocking sports teams from using Native-American symbols in the late 1990s, Tribal attorney Jim Shore, former Chairman James Billie and other tribal leaders scoffed at the controversy. At one point State Sen. James King, an FSU alumnus, tried passing a law to ensure all FSU teams carry the Seminole name.

It failed.Friday's proclamation created little fanfare, and FSU President T.K. Wetherell participated in a small ceremony in the tribe's gymnasium."The Tribal Council ... has not opposed and, in fact, supports the continued use of the name `Seminole' and any associated head logo as currently endorsed by Florida State University," the resolution said.

It also said it would continue to "collaborate on the development of logos and nicknames that all members of the Seminole Tribe of Florida and officials and students of Florida State University can be proud [of]. "
