Blast off

James Rich, 46, of Hollywood, was in the vehicle, parked in the 1000 block of South 56th Avenue, at 1:30 p.m. when he slid from the driver's seat to the passenger side and lit an M-80 or M-100, said police spokesman Capt. Tony Rode. He tried to throw the explosive out of the window, but it blew up in his left hand. The M-80 or M-100 has the power of a quarter-stick of dynamite, Rode said.

Rich was in critical condition with severe burns at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood. Doctors were trying to save his hand in an operation Tuesday night, but Rode said it was likely they will have to amputate at the elbow.

I agree with Alex at SOTP, what do people see in these things? Mr. Rich is 46, not some child or teenager. I'll be 46 in less than three weeks but my interest in fireworks died over 25 years ago. I guess some people never grow up.(They turn into sarcastic Florida bloggers instead?)
