Officers down
From the Sun Sentinel-
PAHOKEE - A massive search was underway Wednesday morning for a pair of suspects who stole a car in Belle Glade and led police on a chase that left two deputies dead and one seriously injured outside the city's downtown, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said. You would seem to think it won't be long before the suspects are apprehended.
The surviving deputy was flown to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, where he was being treated.
The chase started after a woman in Belle Glade called 911 at about 1 a.m. to advise that a neighbor's 1990 gold Toyota Camry was being broken into by two men. As deputies responded, they spotted the car traveling northbound on Route 715. A sheriff's sergeant authorized a pursuit, and three marked sheriff's patrol cars followed the car northbound.
Two other deputies deployed tire deflation devices on the roadway in front of the pursuit on Route 715. The suspects' car crossed over the devices. What happened next is under investigation.
Two deputies on the ground were struck and died at the scene. Another deputy sheriff in one of the patrol cars sustained serious injuries.

After the suspects' car came to a stop, the two suspects ran from the car into a nearby sugar-cane field.
As the Palm Beach Post notes, these are the first Palm Beach County Sheriffs to die in the line of duty since 2002. It has been a rough year for law enforcement in South Florida. Rick at SOTP notes this marks five who died this year. One of whom, Chris Reyka, has his killer(s) still on the loose.
