Nice thought

As many as 30,000 people were expected to attend evening ceremonies at Lane Stadium as the school issues diplomas to graduates, as well as diplomas and class rings to the relatives of 27 students killed in a shooting rampage April 16. Five faculty members also were slain.

Peter and Cathy Read's 19-year-old daughter, freshman Mary Karen Read, had hoped to earn a degree at some point. Peter Read traveled from Annandale with 15 family members for the ceremony, saying, "This is right for us." He called the diplomas, class rings and other recognition "an incredibly important gift" from the university.

Read said he's impressed that Virginia Tech provided another diploma and ring for Mary's mother -- his ex-wife -- Yon Son Yi, of New Jersey.

As I noted earlier, little mention has been made of Mary Karen's birth mother. Perhaps she is keeping her grief private. Thank you Virginia Tech for not forgetting Yon Son Yi.
