Man hits girl with van, drives her home

A Loxahatchee man was arrested after he backed over a 10-year-old girl with his van and then carried the girl to her home before returning to the accident scene, a sheriff's office spokesman said.

The girl, Glenda Hurtado of Loxahatchee, had stepped off a school bus at Yorkshire Drive and Seminole Pratt Road with a friend and was walking home when Terbainee Sarju, 62, attempted to make a three-point U-turn in his blue van, according Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office spokesman Paul Miller.

The 1991 Plymouth struck Glenda, and Sarju jumped out, pulled the girl from under his vehicle and put her in his van, Miller said. Sarju drove the girl to her home, which was about three blocks from his own house, Miller said. Sarju then drove home, picked up his wife and then returned to the accident scene, Miller said.

Sarju was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a suspended license, Miller said.

Glenda was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center where her injuries were not life-threatening.
